Southwick
Our award winning layout is set in the late 1950s/early 60s (British Rail’s early/late crest change over period). The layout represents a fictitious junction station and goods yard on the Somerset & Dorset line. As it is modelled in the late 1950s and early 60’ the few diesels that did run on the S&D are beginning to appear on the layout. Somewhere between Evercreech (new) and Templecombe the layout is able to run trains from the Western stretch and the Southern section of the line with the odd midland engine appearing as a substitute. The station is pure imagination, supposing Templecombe only has an engine shed, with freight being sorted in the yard at Southwick. A third rail has also been added to allow us to run SR EMUs. The idea behind this was an experiment carried out by the Southern in the 30s to cut the cost of the branch line.
With the station being a junction all ordinary passenger services stop at the station with the occasional expresses stopping. The goods depot is served by both road and rail with both steam and diesel locomotives shunting stock around. Majority of trains are hauled by Southern motive power however Midland locomotives and a handful of western locomotives do appear. The aim of the layout was to create a large continuous run junction with constant movement and the ability to run scale length trains.
Constructed on purpose built plywood baseboards with Peco OO trackwork (Code 75), the scenic area of the layout is large with a variety of countryside scenes and of course a large station area. Mostly modified Wills, Ratio and Peco kits. Rolling stock is mostly from Bachmann ,Hornby, Heljan and kits by Dapol.
This layout is available for exhibitions, please contact us for more details.
