Klein Schmalitz HO 1/87 scale (3.5mm to 1ft)
“German railways history on a Micro - from 1914 to 1972….”
Klein Schmalitz is a micro layout only 110cm long and 26cm wide. It is built on an IKEA floating shelf of that size. A leading member of the Facebook Group “Micro Layouts”, Kevin Whyberd, has a charming British Light Railway layout called “Little Narrow” – I wanted to emulate in HO his miniature masterpiece in OO, but with his permission using a German sounding transliteration of his layout’s name (Klein Schmalitz means Little Narrow Place) and locate mine in central northern Germany, on the banks of the middle River Elbe in the so-called ‘Wendland’.
Historic Wendland straddles the Elbe between Lower Saxony’s most easterly town, Schnackenburg, and the most westerly town in Brandenburg, Lenzen. I am deliberately vague about which side of the River Elbe Klein Schmalitz is situated upon, as that allows me to portray it in either East German Deutsche Reichsbahn mode or West German Deutsche Bundesbahn mode. Similarly, because the Prussian Railway dominated this area, the typical Prussian brick built turn-of-the-century architecture serves for either purpose and with a few cosmetic changes several earlier periods in German railway history as well. It is planned to display this layout in KPEV 1914, DRG 1929, DRB 1939, as well as DR 1959 East German and DB 1972 West German modes.
