As a keen O gauge locomotive builder, the layout has been built to display my fleet of O gauge built locomotives in a realistic motive power depot location and also to give a layout that is small enough to have up and operating at home all the time. Other considerations in construction were the ease of transport - 1 car and quick set for exhibiting at model railway exhibitions.
The track work is all Peco and the turntable built from a Metalsmith kit with a modified ABC gears drive, the buildings depict a locomotive depot in the late 50’s through to the end of steam. The small fiddle yard is built using kitchen draw runners.
The layout is an imaginary location somewhere on the south coast and towards the end of the Somerset and Dorset line so that there is a mix of Southern, Western and Midland region locomotives along with the odd unusual visitor which would have brought a summer Saturday special service to the coastal holiday area. Many different classes of locomotive can be seen visiting the depot for coal, water and a quick service before being turned for their next duty.
Most locomotives are kit built from brass and or nickel silver, there is also a growing fleet of modern traction locomotives mainly from the Heljan range which have been weathered and detailed. Rolling stock is a mixture of kit built and ready to run with some interesting visitors again to look out for such as a visit from the local area manager onboard the inspection saloon.
The layout provides hours of operating fun shunting locomotives around and can be used along the lines of a shunting puzzle and gives a realistic location to display the models, with DCC operation and some sound fitted the scene comes to life.
